Types of Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies come in all shapes and sizes. Some are critical and require immediate attention, while others may be annoying but are not critical. How do you know which is which?

Emergencies That Require Immediate Attention

A Knocked Out (Avulsed) Tooth – Aside from a traumatic injury to the jaw, the most critical emergency is a knocked out tooth. If you protect the tooth and get to our office right away, we can often save the tooth. We understand you may not be thinking clearly when an accident like this happens, so here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Call us or have a friend call to let us know what’s happening.
  • Handle the tooth gently so you don’t disturb the root or any attached tissue.
  • Keeping the root moist is essential, so place the tooth in a container of milk, water, or even saliva if necessary.

If your injury involves trauma to your face or jaw, or if you experience excessive bleeding, please call 911 or go directly to an emergency room.

Severe Tooth Pain – This is a common emergency that also needs to be dealt with quickly. Severe pain that makes it difficult to function is a sign that something serious is happening inside your tooth. We will quickly identify the source of your pain and then immediately take steps to provide relief. If you can’t get to our office right away, try an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen or apply a cold compress on and off for about 20 minutes.

Emergencies to Treat as Soon as Possible

A lost crown or filling may be annoying, but if you aren’t in pain, you may not need to drop everything to see us immediately. However, the sooner we see you, the better because we need to protect the tooth from further damage. A lost filling will need to be replaced with a new one, but we can usually save an existing crown if you keep it in a safe place (wrapping it in tissue is fine) until we see you.

Call Us Right Away

All of this information is good to keep in mind, but we don’t want you to spend a lot of time thinking about whether or not you have a real emergency. We would rather have you call our office at (303) 257-8399 and find out you don’t have an emergency than risk your oral health by waiting!
